The Art of Deep Listening:
A Compassionate Nonviolent Communication (NVC) Training

What is
"Deep Listening"?

two hands grasping

Deep Listening is one of the most powerful and important qualities in relationship with others.

In Compassionate Communication, we often refer to this quality of listening as, "empathy" or "empathic listening."

Empathy -- which is about being fully present with another without judgment, analysis, or fixing -- has the ability to radically transform the quality of our relationships, and the very experience of being alive.

Empathy is about emptying our mind, opening our heart, and listening with our whole being. In the process, we become more present with ourselves, others, and with what we really value.

Unfortunately, very few people have been exposed to the skills of deep listening. Instead, most of us use "empathy blocking responses," such as giving advice, reassuring them, educating them, giving them our analysis of them, or telling them stories about our experiences.

While these responses are not inherently or automatically negative, they do tend to block one of the most powerful and influential qualities available to human beings -- empathy.

What are the benefits of Deep Listening?

4 corners people diversity

Practicing empathy in our relationships with others, and with ourselves, has some reliable outcomes:

* Increased harmony and understanding between you and others;

* Higher productivity and effectiveness, because in environments where there is trust and harmony, people work more creatively and freely;

* Joyful giving and receiving to each others' well-being, as opposed to obligation and duty-based giving which have an eventual fallout;

* A stronger community in which people have bonds with each other that stand the test of time and circumstance;

* More happiness and fulfillment because people come to see that we care enough to understand and respect their needs.

* You enjoy other people a LOT more because you are no longer taking things personally; instead, you can perceive their needs and feelings without taking them on.

A quote by Thich Nhat Hahn, a Buddhist monk originally from Vietnam, who now travels the world sharing peacemaking principles and meditation practices:

"Our capacity to make peace with another person and with the world depends very much on our capacity to make peace with ourselves. If we are at war with our parents, our family, our society, or our church, there is probably a war going on inside us also, so the most basic work for peace is to return to ourselves and create harmony among the elements within us."

Description of the Training

   Join us to explore one of the most extraordinary qualities in the human experience -- empathy, or what NVC founder, Marshall Rosenberg, calls, "a special kind of understanding from the heart that supports us in seeing the beauty in others, and in ourselves."

   People are using Compassionate Communication principles in 30 countries to create a world in which everyone's needs matter, and we find ways to settle our differences nonviolently -- without resorting to punishment, force, manipulation, blame or other approaches that we end up paying for later.

   Friday's introduction will incorporate all three primary modes of Compassionate Communication: authentically expressing ourselves; listening to others with empathy; and creating compassion within ourselves.

   Saturday's session will emphasize the power of empathic listening, and how that simple act can restore trust and increase harmony in relationships, and connect across differences no matter our gender, age, race, background or life experience.

   We hope you will join us and our team of trainers and support people including Angela Bronzie, Gail Garvin, Mikki Fogg, Tina Michel, Pamela Wilz, and Maria Yunker.

Communicate
I communicate with wisdom and love.

In every interaction with others, I choose to communicate wisely, responsibly and authentically. Using positive, affirming words to express my ideas and desires enables me to be a force for good in the world, a powerful co-creator with God in every activity and in all arenas of life.

In every word spoken by phone or typed into a computer or handheld device, I am transmitting powerful ideas that can either discourage or uplift the person with whom I am communicating. So I choose to interact thoughtfully through every medium.

Authentic communication builds trust and understanding. My words have a positive impact on my relationships as I communicate with wisdom and love in every way.
