Is Charleston a Bad City for Married Folks?

On April 4, 2014, the Wall Street Journal named Charleston the worst city in the United States to be married. The article was called "Where good marriages Go to Die."

A March 18 Men's Health article noted "If you want to avoid divorce, run far, far away from Charleston, West Virginia."

How'd they come up with this, you may ask.

Well, we have a divorced population of 13.6% (15th in the country) and a divorce rate of 5.5% (5th in the country). At last count, in 2009, in Kanawha County, we had 1352 marriages and 1129 divorces.

Combine these numbers with a dearth of licensed and trained marriage and family therapists and a few other factors, and here we are, #1 again.

KPCC is taking this personally. Our mission is to help people have better relationships with themselves and others. Clearly, we need to be doing better!

What ideas do you have about this? We would love to hear from you!

Jeannie Robertson Returns!
KPCC's 21st Annual Jim Dent Dinner
Save-the-Date
Tuesday, October 21, 2014

KPCC is excited to announce the 2014 Jim Dent Dinner! This year's event will be held Tuesday, October 21 at Embassy Suites Charleston.

The dinner will feature returning entertainer Jeanne Robertson whose stories about her husband "Left Brain" represent the tradition of Southern storytelling at it's finest.

KPCC has served over 45,000 people in our 44 year history. We have so much to be grateful for and celebrate.

The proceeds from the dinner help KPCC focus on our mission: helping people have better relationships with themselves and others by providing counseling and community workshops at an affordable rate in the context of a spiritual, bigger picture, appreciation of life.

Please save the date! We look forward to seeing you Tuesday, October 21!

Bollywood Night WV 2014: A Huge Success!

Dance is a universal language.  And an event that seems to capture the spirit of this most fully is Charleston's Bollywood Night. This year's event on May 17 was full of amazing color, sounds, rhythm and movement.

Dances from India, the Philippines, the Middle East and Latin America all swirled together for a magical evening celebrating the universals of life and love.

Of special note were the dances from the Charleston Ballet, choreographed by Kim Pauley, and the dances choreographed by Lacy Hughes and Celeste Diaz from January's Studio of Dance.

Amy Burdett and Aaron Lee Smith brought high energy to the stage, while Moumita Banerjee's beautiful choreography kept the event grounded in its Asian and Indian roots.

The dancers were all volunteers and they gave of their time, energy, heart and spirit to make a magical evening for everyone.

Through the inspiration of the Bollywood Committee, the massive support of the India Center and the generosity of the 750 guests and donors, over $150,000 in funds were raised for Manna Meal, Inc., WV Health Right and Kanawha Pastoral Counseling Center through the theme, "Bellies, Bodies, and Brains."

One of the blessings of these past few months has been the invitation we received to be part of this year's Bollywood event to be held Saturday, May 17 at 6 p.m. at the Charleston Civic Center.

Bollywood Night WV is a fundraising event sponsored by the India Center with proceeds going to a local charity. This year KPCC, Manna Meal, Inc. and WV Health Right were chosen as the beneficiaries. We are humbled to be in the company of such important community organizations.

Tickets for the event are $100 each, with the proceeds split equally by the three groups. The event always sells out, and here's why: great fun, great food, 800 guests and 100 dancers. We hope to see you there!
